A Northern Lights Sleigh Ride Through Silence and Story
A quiet ride through snowy forest, guided only by the horse’s steps and a bell from the past. Experience the nature of Lapland by sitting in a horse-drawn sleigh ride along snow-covered forest paths.
The Finnhorse is a strong and calm native breed, traditionally used in farming and forestry. The horse wears traditional working harness, and as you move through the forest, you hear the gentle ringing of a bell. The same bell once used by my grandfather still jingles with us today.
The sleigh ride takes you away from the beaten paths. The silence is broken only by the sound of snow beneath the runners and the steady rhythm of the horse. The forest opens into quiet spaces, and above you the sky feels wide and endless. Far from any light pollution, the darkness is deep and even the smallest stars seem closer. You move quietly through this stillness, as if part of it. If the sky is clear, the moment may shift. A soft glow of the Northern Lights can appear across the open sky. Green waves may drift above you.
A moment of stillness is carried by the rhythm of the horse and held by the silence of Lapland.
Fireside Moments and Local Flavors in Lapland
After the ride, the evening continues by the fire in our yard. You gather around open flames as we serve a selection of local flavors, prepared from ingredients rooted in this region.
The flavors you taste by the fire are not just prepared for this evening. They come from our own year in the North.
You will taste:
- traditionally air-dried reindeer meat
- rye crispbread with herb spread
- sautéed forest mushrooms
- traditional lingonberry porridge
- cloudberry jam with Finnish bread cheese
- a herbal drink
The reindeer meat has been traditionally air-dried by us in early spring, under the edge of our roof, where cold winds and time do their quiet work. In early summer, we gather wild herbs and flowers from the forest, often under the soft light of the midnight sun.
As the seasons turn, we move with them. In July, we walk the wetlands to pick cloudberries, our “orange gold” of the North. In early autumn, we collect wild mushrooms as they rise from the forest floor. And just before the first snow, we gather lingonberries, later prepared into the porridge you will taste by the fire.
For us, food from nature is not an addition to the experience. It is part of how we live and a way to share that life with you, even for a moment.
If the sky is clear, the Northern Lights may appear above you, moving across the open sky as you taste the flavors of the North. Moments like these are not built around chasing the lights, but around being present when they arrive.
