A Unique Aurora cabin in a Real Arctic Village
Lumikko sits in the middle of our quiet Arctic village of Vuontisjärvi in northern Lapland. This is a real village, not a place built around tourism. The surroundings are peaceful, and you may hardly see anyone during your stay.
You are staying in a real Arctic village, where the atmosphere is extremely quiet and still. From Lumikko Aurora Loft, the landscape opens towards the national park and vast wilderness.
To the south, the view reaches towards the national park. To the north, the horizon stretches across vast wilderness. The village is small and quiet, while the Arctic landscape opens around it.
Wide views in every direction
Windows Around the Entire Upstairs Loft
The windows run around the entire loft, opening views in every direction. From here, you can follow the landscape through changing Arctic light and easily notice when something begins to happen in the sky.
During the Northern Lights season, this becomes especially meaningful. The aurora can appear in different parts of the sky, and Lumikko’s windows allow you to keep an eye on every direction.
Around Lumikko Aurora Loft, the horizon is wide and the sky is open, giving you space to experience the aurora properly under the wide open sky.
The Northern Lights at Lumikko Aurora Loft
75 %
Auroras are visible on roughly 75% of clear nights in our region during the Northern Lights season.
Location far north is one of the most important factors when you hope to see the Northern Lights. Lumikko is located far north in Lapland, close to the Aurora Oval, in a region with very favourable conditions for seeing the aurora. This northern location matters because the farther north you are, the less solar activity is needed for the Northern Lights to appear overhead.
The surroundings also help. There is very little light pollution in our village, and once the streetlights are switched off at 11 p.m., the darkness deepens even further. The nearby western fells often help shelter the area from clouds coming from the west. The open landscape around the village gives broad views towards the sky.
The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and their appearance can never be guaranteed.
Wide views in every direction
Who Is Lumikko Aurora Loft For?
Lumikko is best suited for two or three adults, with a maximum of three guests.
The sleeping area is an open loft upstairs, above the kitchen and bathroom. There are no separate bedrooms, so Lumikko works especially well for a couple or a small group who are comfortable sharing the same open space.
The loft has one 120 cm double bed and one 80 cm single bed. Downstairs, there is also a lounge chair that can be opened into an extra bed.
The stairs leading upstairs are very steep, which is important to know before booking. Because of this, Lumikko is not suitable for guests with mobility challenges and not recommended for children under 15.
For guests who appreciate a unique place, open landscapes, silence and the possibility of following the Northern Lights during their stay, Lumikko offers a memorable stay in northern Lapland.

Why Here? Why This Far North?
This is one of the most remote inhabited areas in Europe – surrounded by vast official wilderness areas that are rarely seen by tourists. Here, silence is real, darkness is deep, and the skies stretch endlessly.
Lumikko Aurora Loft is located in our small and quiet Arctic village, surrounded by wide northern landscapes.
Our far northern location also offers excellent conditions for seeing the Northern Lights. Statistically, our region sees auroras on around 75% of clear nights from autumn to spring. The western fells help with cloud conditions, and there is very little light pollution in our village. Once the streetlights are switched off at 11 p.m., the surroundings become especially dark.
Not everyone gets here. And that is exactly why it is worth it.

A STORY OF ITS OWN
A Cabin Built for Arctic Research
Before it became a place to stay, the building was used for Arctic research. Its original purpose was to study how Arctic conditions affect building structures.
You can still see traces of that work inside the cabin. Small holes and marks left by measuring instruments remain visible in the walls today. These marks are not hidden or repaired; they remain as part of the cabin’s identity, a reminder of its unusual past.
The name Lumikko also carries a piece of the cabin’s history. In Finnish, “lumikko” means the least weasel (Mustela nivalis). The name is also a play on “lumi” (snow) and “koe” (experiment), a reference to the Arctic research the cabin was originally built for.
