Enontekiö's Far Northern Location Near the Aurora Oval
In Finland, the Northern Lights are most frequently seen in northern Lapland.
Here in Hetta, Enontekiö, our far northern location near the Aurora Oval makes the conditions especially favourable for aurora viewing.
Also called Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights are a natural light display created when charged particles from the Sun interact with the Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere.
The Aurora Oval is a band around the Earth’s magnetic poles where auroras occur most often. Hetta, Enontekiö is located close to this active zone, which is one of the main reasons why the Northern Lights are seen here more often than in the southern parts of Lapland.
When the sky is dark and clear, the Northern Lights can statistically be seen in Enontekiö on three out of four nights. In other words, on a clear night, the chance of seeing the aurora here is about 75 percent.

Some coastal areas in Northern Norway are even farther north, but cloud cover is often more of a challenge there. Moist Atlantic air often brings clouds to the Norwegian coast. The mountains to the west of us can sometimes hold back the clouds on the coast, leaving the inland skies here in Enontekiö clearer.

Light pollution makes the Northern Lights harder to see. Hetta is a small village with around 700 residents, and tourism here is moderate. The other villages in Enontekiö are even smaller, so you do not need to travel far to leave artificial lights behind and find truly dark skies. In deep darkness, even faint auroras can become visible.

Best Time to See the Northern Lights in Enontekiö
The Northern Lights can be seen in Lapland whenever the nights are dark enough.
The best time to come see the Northern Lights here in Enontekiö is between early September and the end of March. During these months, the nights are dark enough to give you a real chance of seeing them.
We usually see the first auroras of the season in late August, and the last ones in early April. By then, though, the nights are already growing lighter, and the sky isn’t fully dark anymore, which makes the aurora harder to see.
Autumn is a beautiful time to see the Northern Lights in Enontekiö. The nights are very dark because there is no snow yet to brighten the landscape. Lakes are still open, and on calm nights the auroras can sometimes reflect on the water. You can read more about autumn auroras here: Autumn Aurora.
In spring, the nights start to become quite light again in Enontekiö during April. The last Northern Lights of the spring season may still be possible to see early April.
The Northern Lights are slightly more active around autumn and spring, but the difference is not so significant that you should plan your whole trip around it.
